Materials : naturally dyed wool weft on cotton warp

Techniques : clasped weft tapestry, weft resist dye, slit tapestry, braided and handknotted fringe

Size : 38” by 37”

Price : 6000 CAD

I used natural pigments including walnut, marigold, indigo, pomegranate, and ferrous sulfate to dye 35 different skeins of wool for the border. For the night sky I used a weft resist dye technique in combination with a slit tapes try technique to create the appearance of hundreds of small stars. After weaving I twined, braided, and knotted the fringe. This leaves a more decorative and traditional fringe, but it can also be redone if a more clean and secure fringe is needed for mounting on a frame.

I used natural pigments including marigold, indigo, pomegranate, buckthorn, and himalayan rhubarb to dye 35 different skeins of wool. Using a combination of slit and clasped weft tapestry techniques and a carefully drawn digital cartoon, I wove this as one whole piece. It is not stitched together after weaving. After weaving I twined the fringe, secured the fringe with a pH neutral adhesive and cut the remainder. This leaves a clean but secure fringe that can be easily mounted on a frame.

Walnut Tree

Materials : indigo and walnut, ferrous sulfate dyed wool on cotton warp

Techniques : clasped weft tapestry, braided and handknotted fringe

Size : 38” by 36”

Price : 8000 CAD

For this piece, I collected eastern black walnuts on the island of Montreal. The pigments in the hull of the walnut yield a dark rich brown, which when modified with ferrous sulfate turns very black. Black is an otherwise difficult colour to achieve using natural pigments. I contrasted this rich black with a stepped gradient in indigo dyed wool. After weaving I twined, braided, and knotted the fringe. This leaves a more decorative and traditional fringe, but it can also be redone if a more clean and secure fringe is needed for mounting on a frame.

Materials : mill dyed wool weft on cotton warp

Techniques : clasped weft tapestry, braided and handknotted fringe

Size : 74” by 47”

Price : 6000 CAD

This piece is an homage to the hand. Using an inverted half gradient to create the silhouette of a hand, the hand itself appears to be either emerging or descending into the weaving depending from which direction you are looking at it. My interest in op-art and illusion is apparent in this piece. After weaving I twined, braided, and knotted the fringe. This leaves a more decorative and traditional fringe, but it can also be redone if a more clean and secure fringe is needed for mounting on a frame.

Techniques : clasped weft tapestry, twined fringe

Size : 55” by 44”

Price : 6000 CAD

I used indigo to dye the sky, and osage and ferrous sulfate to dye the skeins that I blended to create the gradient in the flower. The indigo and osage dyes react differently to light exposure. Over time the indigo will fade, but the osage and iron dyed wool will get darker. After weaving I twined the fringe, secured the fringe with a pH neutral adhesive and cut the remainder. This leaves a clean but secure fringe that can be easily mounted on a frame.

To make this piece, I used natural osage and indigo to dye different depths of shade on skeins of wool. It was then woven using clasped weft tapestry techniques, carefully measured samples, and a digital cartoon. After weaving I twined the fringe, secured the fringe with a pH neutral adhesive and cut the remainder. This leaves a clean but secure fringe that can be easily mounted on a frame.

Techniques : clasped weft tapestry, eccentric weft, slit tapestry, twined fringe

Size : 39” by 37”

Price : 6000 CAD

This piece grew out of a collaboration with the Swedish artist Miriam Parkman for our show “Knotwork” at Craft Ontario in the spring of 2024. Miriam sent me yarn from Sweden and I made a piece, inspired by the Lunaria plant and Swedish artists like Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom. After weaving I twined the fringe, secured the fringe with a pH neutral adhesive and cut the remainder. This leaves a clean but secure fringe that can be easily mount ed on a frame.

Size : 72” by 55”

Price : 10000 CAD

For this piece I used indigo to dye single ply yarn in different hues of blue. By mixing and marling these blues in different combinations, I set a streaked blue sky against the white clouds. I also employed a technique I have developed of stepped stripes that gives the clouds a false sense of depth. After weaving I twined the fringe, secured the fringe with a pH neutral adhesive and cut the remainder. This leaves a clean but secure fringe that can be easily mounted on a frame.
